Fort Bliss, site of the United States Army's Air Defense Center, has called El Paso
home for more than a century. Fort Bliss procures about $80 million in products
and services each year, of which approximately $60 million is purchased locally.
The total annual military economic impact is over $1 billion. There are more than
2,500 military representatives from approximately 30 countries posted at Fort Bliss
for air defense artillery training. Germany and Japan currently maintain the largest
contingents.
White Sands Missile Range (missile and laser testing) and Holloman Air Force Base
are also located in the region and have a substantial economic impact on El Paso.

Fort Bliss came to El Paso as a Calvary post in 1848. Today the military post has
become the largest Air Defense Training Center in the world. Fort Bliss shares a
long history with El Paso, playing a vital role in the city's economy as well as
it's growth, with more than 15,000 active military personnel stationed in the area.
The Fort Bliss Museum is located at a reconstructed site of the original location.
Adobe walls provide warmth in the winter and cool respite from the summer heat.
Inside, displays, photographs, maps, and personal items form the exhibit. Outside,
the grounds are landscaped with plants indigenous to the Chihuahuan desert.
One block south of the museum is the latest addition to the historic preservation
of Fort Bliss. The Air Defense / Artillery Museum, the only one of its kind, is
dedicated to the history of air defense, housing equipment and displays detailing
its evolution.
Both museums are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm.
